Swap Etiquette
Just a few reminders to everyone considering joining a swap. We want each swap to be successful for each swapper and it's hostess.
"Give fabric you would enjoy to receive back."
Swap Rules: Always read through the swap guidelines very closely. There are measurements, guidelines and other requirements that need to be followed to the letter. The hostess has the right to send back anything that does not meet the swap guidelines!
QF Members Only: The swaps on the QuiltFriends website are usually designated for members of the
QuiltFriends email list. We do this because we feel we know everyone on the list, and we know that we can trust each other. It is up to the hostess of each swap if they want to let non-QuiltFriends members into their swap.
Packaging Your Swap: When packaging your swap to send to the hostess, make sure you read the guidelines to see how they want it packaged. This is a big deal when it comes time to swap and re-package it. If the guidelines say "baggie", it does not mean plastic wrap. It's almost impossible to repackage your swap in plastic wrap that has already been used. Also make sure that each baggie of fabric/blocks you send in is labeled with your name, address and email address. This is very important to the swap hostess...and it's a good way to make sure you get back all that you should.
Deadlines: Hostesses must adhere to the time guidelines. This means your swap must be to them on time. Anything that is late, will be returned to the sender
un-swapped. If you know ahead of the deadline that you can not honor your commitment
in the swap, please tell the hostess as soon as possible. It's better for you to back out gracefully, than to keep the hostess wondering...and give yourself a bad reputation.
Fabric Quality: Make sure that the fabric you are sending into the swap meets the guidelines set by the hostess. We don't want poor-quality fabric. Also make sure that all of the fabric is accurately cut. Again, the hostess has the right to send anything back that she doesn't feel meets her guidelines. None of us want to send in nice, quality, accurately cut fabric, and not get the same in return.
Quilt Shop Quality: Quilt shop quality does not mean fabric off the calico wall at JoAnn's/Hancock etc. There is a big difference. You should be able to tell by the look and feel of it. You can buy good quality fabric at the chain stores though....usually the "fashion cotton prints" or the designer calico. When a hostesses guidelines call for quilt shop quality fabric, that's what it means. It's not fair for the ones who send in good, quality fabric to get the poor quality in return. If you can't/won't send in good quality material, don't sign up for the swap.
Postage: Make sure that you have plenty of postage on your return envelope! It can not be metered postage either...it must be in stamps. The hostess does not want to pay for your swap out of her own pocket.
International Swappers: International swappers should always send a return envelope...without the postage. Usually, the hostess will ask for a little something extra to cover the postage to return your swap. Make sure you are sending enough to cover the return postage...it's very expensive to send something out of the country. It's not fair for the hostess to pay for your swap to be returned, with no compensation.
Hostess Appreciation: Most swappers send the hostess of their swap a little hostess gift of some sort. It is recommended that if you can't send a little gift, at least write a thank-you note to them. Hostessing is a lot of work and organization. We should thank the hostess for their time and effort.
All of the guidelines for each swap are printed up in plenty of time for you to decide if you want to participate. If you don't feel that you can abide by the specific guidelines or deadlines, do not sign up for the swap.
